Terminology
A list of common terminology used by the trans community. These are not ordered in any way.
Transgender (Trans) - an umbrella term for a person that does not identify with the gender they were born as.
Cisgender (Cis) - a person that identifies fully with the gender they were born as, not trans.
Gender Dysphoria - a distress and discomfort caused by the gender the trans person was born in. It is professionally diagnosed, but can be self-diagnosed until able to seek professional help.
Ally - a person that is not a part of the LGBTQ+ community, but supports them.
T.E.R.F - an acronym for Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist. They believe that trans women are not real women and do not belong in their feminist movements.
Transphobia - a dislike or prejudice against the trans community and those within it.
Gender - a fluid terms for how a person identifies (male, female, both, neither, a combination).
AFAB - an acronym for Assigned Female At Birth.
AMAB - and acronym for Assigned Male At Birth.
Binary - used to describe male and female.
Non-binary - an umbrella term used to describe a person outside male and female.
Transition - the process of transitioning to your gender.
Passing - when a trans person is seen as the gender they identify with.
HRT - acronym for Hormone Replacement Therapy. It is a common thing that trans people choose to go through to help decrease the intensity of gender dysphoria. A person takes hormones to replace the ones that causes them increased dysphoria.
Bottom Surgery - when a person gets surgery on their bottom genitalia.
Top Surgery - when a person gets surgery for their top genitalia. It is more common with transgender men.
Two-Spirit - an exclusive term for Native American and First Nations. It is a person that identifies having bith masculine and feminine spirit.
Deadname - the name that a trans person was born with. Many choose to change it socially and/or legally.
Deadnaming - calling a person by their deadname.
Outed - when someone's identity is disclosed to someone else without their consent.
