Hormones

There are 2 different HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) people that some trans people choose to take. Many trans women/nonbinary people choose to take estrogen. Many trans men/nonbinary people choose to take testosterone. For many, you have to go through a lot to start HRT if you so choose to. Many places need 2 doctors letters, a gender dysphoria diagnosis, and sometimes even seeing a gender therapist regularly. You are still valid if you choose not to take hormones or can't because of medical issues. This is just what some choose to do to help lower the intensity of gender dysphoria.

If you take E (estrogen), there are a few forms it comes in. The most common is by pill. There are also skin patches, topical creams, gels, and sprays. Some side effects can include: A blood clot in a deep vein (deep vein thrombosis) or in a lung (pulmonary embolism), High triglycerides, a type of fat (lipid) in your blood, Weight gain, Infertility, High potassium (hyperkalemia), High blood pressure (hypertension), Type 2 diabetes, Cardiovascular disease, Excessive prolactin in your blood (hyperprolactinemia), nipple discharge, Stroke, Increased risk of breast cancer compared to men whose gender identity and expression matches the stereotypical societal characteristics related to their sex assigned at birth (cisgender men). Always talk to your doctor if something is wrong.
